The First Latch & the Golden Hour
The golden hour is the first 60 minutes post birth.
It is considered a period of transition for a newborn who has emerged from an internal uterine environment to an external environment.
The first 60 minutes after a baby is born is a critical time for both baby and mom.
One important aspect of the golden hour is to give the baby skin to skin contact with its mother to help promote bonding. Skin to skin can help the mother’s body release oxytocin. Oxytocin is essential for maternal behavior and breastfeeding.
Did you know that a baby who is undisturbed and on their mother’s chest will instinctually look for the nipple and latch themselves?
Isn’t it amazing how our bodies know just what we need when we allow nature to take control?!?
